Magical Selous River Camp

Located right alongside the vast and untamed Selous Game Reserve, Selous River Camp is located closer to the Selous Game Reserve than any other camp and enjoys dazzling panoramic views of the Rufiji River.

Accommodation at Selous River Camp consists of unique riverbank "Mudhuts" or more simple tents located back in the forest. The Mudhuts are what the camp is famous for, and the contrast between the traditionally built structure with mud exterior, and the well furnished interior is quite striking. Mudhuts have lovely views over the river, which can be enjoyed from outdoor seating on the veranda, and with double beds, large ensuite bathrooms and solar power fans, they are comfortable and for many guests a one-in-a-lifetime experience! The tents are simple, but affordable, and for guests looking for a way to enjoy all the magic of Selous River Camp and the Selous Game Reserve on a tighter budget, these are a great way to do that.

Safaris with Selous River Camp are accompanied by one of our expert, english-speaking guides. One of the many joys of the Selous Game Reserve is the ability to enjoy the reserve by road, foot or water:

Game Drives are in custom-made, open-sided 4x4 safari cruisers, which allow for an uninterrupted view (and better photography) and give you the chance to cover greater distances in search of larger mammals and predators in different areas of the Selous. Off-road driving is permitted in the Selous Game Reserve, which means we can get you closer to the wildlife. Game Drive Safaris are a leisurely, full-day affair and leave camp after breakfast equipped with a cool box of cold drinks and a picnic hamper, ready to start exploring the reserve. The guide will tailor the drive to your interests and visit the areas of the reserve with the highest concentrations of wildlife. During the hottest part of the day you'll stop off under the shade of a large tree, often beside a lake, to watch the wildlife coming to drink while you enjoy a picnic lunch.

Walking Safaris through the Selous Game Reserve are accompanied by an armed ranger as well as our guide. Walking safaris are a gentle stroll, and don't aim to get you up close to the animals (that's what game drives are for!) instead they are a chance to experience the bush up close and learn about its fascinating smaller side. Walkers normally leave camp at dawn after tea/coffee and cookies (evening walks are also possible) and as you immerse yourself in the bush you'll learn about the side of the bush which you might miss from the game drive car - the birds, animal tracks, insects, plants and flowers. Your guide will teach you to track wildlife on foot, you'll discover about the habitats of the wildlife, touch and smell plants and really get a very intimate feel for the wilderness.

Boat Safaris may be what the Selous is most famous for, and with good reason! A day spent on the lakes of the Selous and the Rufiji River is unforgettable! Selous River Camp offers two types of boat safari, shorter dawn/sunset safaris which are on the river outside the reserve and give a taste of the experience, or full day explorations into the reserve. There's no better way to get up close to hippos and crocodiles, the colourful bird life is dazzling, and if you're on a full day boat safari, in addition to other wildlife, you may be lucky enough to see elephants bathing or crossing the river.
