Mudhut Rooms

Selous River Camp offers only six ensuite Mudhut rooms, each situated overlooking the river and providing comfortable accommodation which blends entirely into the surrounding forest.

Each unique mudhut is built from locally sourced materials by local craftsmen using traditional techniques. The palm thatch roofs and mud walls keep the mudhuts cool during the heat of the day and help the Mudhut to disappear into the surrounding bush. Mudhut rooms are furnished with beautiful rustic furniture all made by hand in camp, mostly from natural materials found close by. Bedspreads and curtains are all made by our tailor from Tanzanian Kitenge cloth. The rooms are softly lit in the evenings with paraffin lamps. (See here for electricity and charging.)

Each Mudhut has an en-suite bathroom with large hot water 'rain' shower, flush toilet and hand made terracotta wash basin. Water is heated by traditional wood burning stoves. The rooms are designed for couples, with each hut having a four poster double bed. Two extra single beds can be added if required to create a cosy room for a family, or a twin room for friends.

Staying in these remarkable rooms is an experience in itself, being so different from the usual accommodation on offer. Sleeping in a Mudhut allows you the chance to relax with some of the comforts of home in an incredible rustic setting whilst experiencing the magic of falling asleep hearing the hippos honking in the river below and the bush babies in the trees above.
