About Selous River Camp

At Selous River Camp we aim for a camp that blends into the natural environment and minimises disturbance to wildlife and their habitats whilst supporting local communities. We value outstanding personal service and professional guiding and understand that tasty food, cold beers and a campfire are very important after a long day on safari.

Selous River Camp was built out of passion. Kenny and Katie Woolfrey met in school in Tanzania when they were 17 and were immediately inseperable. Kenny, a Tanzanian professional Wildlife Guide, was introduced to the wilderness at a very early age. Katie, moved from England to Tanzania at the age of 14 and is devoted to wildlife and the bush. During Kenny's last year at Mweka College of African Wildlife Management they decided to take a wild leap of faith and attempt to build a safari camp from scratch.

As Kenny and Katie were only 19 years old, they didn't have a large amount of cash with which to develop the bushland and so Selous River Camp started our as a very basic campsite. By reinvesting money that guests paid, Kenny and Katie slowly built the camp up to be the very special place that it is today.

The camp is has been managed since June 2015 by their very close friend, Baraka.

Baraka is half Dutch and half Tanzanian and has spent almost all of his life living in Africa. After graduating from Mweka College of African Wildlife Management in 2004 he has spent his entire professional life working in the bush involved in various conservation and tourism related projects. His enthusiastic and friendly nature and wide ranging expertise make him a superb and dedicated host.

All staff at Selous River Camp are Tanzanian, many of them coming from our local village, Mloka. Our in-camp training program means that the majority of our staff came to us as unskilled workers - our best chef used to work at a chipsi-mayai (chips and egg - a local street food) stall and now makes anything from lasagne with home made pasta to lemon meringue pie!

We all look forward to welcoming you to the Selous!

Reviews of Selous River Camp:

"Selous River Camp is an authentic safari experience like no other! Escape from your busy life and come to the peace found in this camp.
We loved our game drives with our AMAZING guide Dennis, soaking up his incredible knowledge and spending the day with this graceful, charming person. I miss him saying 'Nature is just soooooo wonderful' already. With Dennis (and our fabulous driver Adam) we saw elephants, lions, buffalo, hippos, crocodiles and LEOPARDS!
We loved cuddling up around the campfire at night, underneath a blanket of bright stars, listening to the manager Baracka telling us great stories and sharing many great laughs with our friends.
The staff here are truly exceptional. Their genuine, beautiful nature made us feel so welcome, at home and as if nothing was too much trouble. Dula was a gem, as was Simon and Winifred..."
