Selous River Camp Location

Selous River Camp is located on the very edge of Africa's largest protected wilderness area - the Nyerere National Park (part of Selous Game Reserve).

The camp is set overlooking the spectacular Rufiji river, within woodland commonly visited by (among other wildlife) three different species of monkey, herds of elephant and a huge variety of birdlife.

Being the closest camp to the park, located right on the border, means guests avoid long drives to the entrance gate and save money on entry fees.

Nyerere National Park can be reached by road or by air. Travelling to the camp is easy, keep reading for how you can get to us:

By Air:

Flights can be booked online with several airlines which fly to the Selous, including Coastal Aviation, Auric Air, and Safari Air Link. Our partner company, Wild Things, can also book flights for you. Email them on enquiries@wildthingsafaris.com

The closest aistrip to Selous River Camp is Mtemere. We can collect you from there free of charge - it's only a short 10 minute drive back to camp.

Flights last around 45 minutes from Dar es Salaam and it's also possible to fly to/from Zanzibar and other areas in Tanzania. As the airstrip is located within Nyerere National Park, there is a landing fee to pay on arrival of $11.80 per person which we would charge to your invoice if you arrive by plane. We can collect you from the airstrip and drive you short the 10 minutes through the game reserve back to camp free of charge.

Driving:

The drive from Dar es Salaam to Selous River Camp is 230km and takes around 5-6 hours by car. There's good tarmac up to Kibiti and then from Kibiti to the camp (100km) is bush road which winds through several villages. It is also possible to reach us via Morogoro, Kisaki and Matambwe.

By Transfer Car:

If you want to come by road, we recommend booking a road transfer with our partner company, Wild Things. (Please note that the transfers are not operated by Selous River Camp and Selous River Camp will not be held responsible for the service provided by or the negligence or misconduct of that company!)

The car and driver can collect you from anywhere in Dar es Salaam at anytime between 6am and 12pm, including picking you up from Dar es Salaam airport. Charges are $295 one way (per vehicle, not per person!) for this service.

Contact Wild Things by emailing:
enquiries@wildthingsafaris.com

We normally recommend leaving at 7am, so that you can reach the camp in time for lunch.

It may also be worth contacting tour companies to compare pricing, please see our resources page for companies we recommend.

If your budget and time allows, we suggest arriving by road and departing by air. Although the car journey is longer and less comfortable than flying, it does give you the change to see some of "real" Tanzania, and also leaves you with a sense of how far from civilisation you are. It's also really incredible to see the vastness of the Selous from the air, and fly over the Rufiji River.

By Bus:
There is a local bus which leaves Dar es Salaam (Majaribio roundabout on Mahunda Street in the Tandika Majaribio/Temeke Sudani area) at around 7am daily and drives to Mloka village, where we can collect you free of charge. The bus is not the most reliable source of transport and is quite uncomfortable - and as a result we don't recommend it unless you are an adventurous traveller or are on a very tight budget!

By Train:
Sadly, we cannot offer pick up from any of the train stations. The timetable of the train means that the train arrives in the evening. As we are not permitted to drive in the park after 6.30pm, and the train stations are on the other side of the park to Selous River Camp, we are unable to bring you back to camp until the next day.
