Selous River Camp

LATEST COVID-19 UPDATE (9th February 2022): We're very excited to say that we're hoping to reopen Selous River Camp again in June! We're planning on starting in a much smaller capacity than pre-covid, and won't know for a few weeks yet if it will be possible at all, but we ARE taking bookings now for June onwards. Please do get in touch if you're thinking of coming to stay and we can give you the latest information and tentatively book your accommodation.

Discover the exclusive wilderness of the newly established Nyerere National Park (part of the Selous Game Reserve) from this unique safari camp. Perched high overlooking the vast Rufiji River, you can watch hippos lazily wallow in the shallows, birds soaring over the water and crocodiles sunning themselves on the sandbanks. Our guides will take you into the bush to discover a whole range of exciting safaris, from thrilling game drives, to relaxing boat safaris exploring the river and lakes of the park and fascinating walking safaris.

Magical Selous River Camp

As the most highly reviewed camp in the area, we are renowned for personal service, and nestled within woodland alongside the vast and untamed Nyerere National Park (part of the Selous Game Reserve), Selous River Camp is located closer to the National Park than any other camp too.

9 Large Riverbank Mudhuts | 4 Simple Forest Tents

The Mudhuts are what Selous River Camp is famous for, and the contrast between the traditional mud structure, and the well appointed interior is quite striking. Mudhuts have lovely views over the river, which can be enjoyed from outdoor seating on the veranda, and with double beds, large ensuite bathrooms and solar power fans, they are comfortable and for many guests a once-in-a-lifetime experience! The tents are simple, but affordable, and for guests looking for a way to enjoy the magic of Selous River Camp and Nyerere National Park on a tighter budget, these are a great way to do that.

Game Drives

Selous River Camp Game Drives are in custom-made, open-sided 4x4 safari cruisers, which allow for an uninterrupted view (and better photography) than closed or pop-roof cars, and give you the chance to cover greater distances in search of larger mammals and predators in different areas of the Selous. One of the joys of the Selous is that off-road driving is permitted, which means we can get you closer to the wildlife. Game Drive Safaris are leisurely, full-day affairs and you leave camp after breakfast equipped with a cool box of cold drinks and a picnic, ready to start exploring the reserve. Our guide will tailor the drive to your interests and visit the areas of the reserve with the highest concentrations of wildlife. During the hottest part of the day you'll stop off under the shade of a large tree, often beside a lake, to watch the wildlife coming to drink while you enjoy a picnic lunch.

Boat Safaris

Safaris on the water may be what the Selous is most famous for, and with good reason! A day spent on the lakes of the Selous and the Rufiji River is unforgettable! Selous River Camp offers two types of boat safari, shorter dawn/sunset safaris which are on the river outside the reserve and give a taste of the experience, or full day explorations into the reserve. There's no better way to get up close to hippos and crocodiles, the colourful bird life is dazzling, and if you're on a full day boat safari, in addition to other wildlife, you may be lucky enough to see elephants bathing or crossing the river.

Walking Safaris

Discover the Selous Game Reserve step-by-step on a walking safari accompanied by an armed ranger as well as our guide. Walking safaris are a gentle stroll, and don't aim to get you up close to the animals (that's what game drives are for!) instead they are a chance to experience the bush up close and learn about its fascinating smaller side. Walkers normally leave camp at dawn after tea/coffee and cookies (evening walks are also possible) and as you immerse yourself in the bush you'll learn about the side of the bush which you might miss from the game drive car - the birds, animal tracks, insects, plants and flowers. Your guide will teach you to track wildlife on foot, you'll discover about the habitats of the wildlife, touch and smell plants and really get a very intimate feel for the wilderness.
