The unique Mudhuts at Selous River Camp, nestled among the trees along the riverbank, offer a harmonious blend of comfort and authenticity. Each mudhut is meticulously crafted to enhance your safari experience, a place where you can unwind after unforgettable wildlife encounters with fantastic views of the Rufiji River.

As the original safari camp offering this type of accommodation, our Mudhuts are a thoughtfully-designed blend of authentic, traditional earth building with chic, rustic décor.

The Mudhut rooms are perfect for family groups or romantic getaways. Read on to find out why our Mudhuts are so popular with guests …

Earthy, airy and comfortable

Crafted using using traditional Tanzanian methods and built using local, sustainable materials like earth, sticks and sisal rope, the palm thatched Mudhut rooms blend seamlessly into the natural surroundings.

A river-facing veranda opens into a comfortable and breezy interior. The inside of the Mudhut is fully-decorated and furnished with unique rustic furniture - handmade in our camp workshop from tree branches - including a four-poster double bed, draped romantically with fine mosquito netting.

Bed linen and curtains are tailormade from brightly-coloured African kitenge fabrics, and handwoven palm mat carpets the floor.

Softly lit in the evenings, each hut has a solar power system providing lighting and a fan to keep you cool during warmer nights. Imagine dozing in bed, tuning in to the vibrant day-night soundscape of the bush.

The simplicity and rustic charm of the mudhuts takes you on a journey back in time, offering a unique opportunity to disconnect from the modern world and immerse yourself in the tranquility of the natural environment.

Unique, authentic and clean

The clean en-suite bathroom features a hot water shower, european flush toilet and washbasin. Water is heated a short distance from your hut by a traditional wood-burning stove. Towels, washcloths and soaps are all provided.

No two Mudhuts are the same - each is unique with its own character and design. All Mudhuts are located high along the river bank and have elevated views of the Rufiji river and its wildlife. Some rooms are large enough to add additional beds to create twins, triples, or rooms for four. A larger, two bedroom Family Mudhut is also available.

Staying in one of these remarkable Mudhuts is a once in a lifetime experience in itself. Sleeping in a Mudhut allows you the chance to relax with some of the comforts of home in an incredible rustic setting whilst experiencing the magic of falling asleep hearing the hippos honking in the river below and the bush babies in the trees above.

“I didn’t expect much from mudhuts. But in those I had best nights in Tanzania. From outside it looks like a nice shack but from inside it is like real hotel room! And in the bush! You wake up with hippos and birds sounds. Great staff, great food and fantastic view.”

— Tomislav, TripAdvisor

“I had the privilege of staying in a "Mudhut". Mudhut you say? Yes, that is what they call it, and technically, the walls are made the traditional way - with mud. It felt like a castle though! There were two bedrooms, each with a fan, and a private bathroom. There was also a lovely little patio area outside where you could sit and watch the sunset over the river. I felt like a queen!”
